Review of Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff:

Posted on March 29, 2011 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

Since there is very little record of her life, this was not your average biography. I liked the way Stacy was able to support the conclusions she came to, though. It was a little dry, as was expected, but Stacy … Continue reading →

Cutting for Stone, by Abraham Verghese

Posted on March 7, 2011 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

This book really caught me by surprise–it had good reviews, but it just didn’t seem like my kind of book. But, I took a chance and I’m very glad I did. It takes place in Ethiopa (another first for me), … Continue reading →

Best Served Cold, Joe Abercrombie

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

What a roller coaster ride. At first, I thought this book was going to be a wannabe “Pillars of the Earth,”, but I was soon proved wrong. It takes place in about the same era, circa 17th century (or somewhere … Continue reading →

A killer is leaving clues from stories written by Edgar Allen Poe. But the police miss the connection, and a reporter recognizes the vital link because the last person killed just happens to be his brother–and he won’t quit, like … Continue reading →

Money to Burn, James Grippando

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

Ha–great timing. How often do you read a book about some arcane stock market definition, wondering if it’ll ever be useful, and then read about the very same thing in breaking news a week later? A key element of this … Continue reading →

Deeper Than the Dead, Tami Hoag

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

You know how oftentimes a story is told from the viewpoint of a main character? Tami Hoag manages to do it with two children that stumble across a dead body in the woods. Then from the viewpoint of one of … Continue reading →

Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett

Posted on September 29, 2009 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

This is a delicious book–it has it all: intrigue, deception, treachery, violence, wars, and oh yes, a little sex. It takes place in England in the 1600’s, but covers several generations of characters. It’s totally unlike Ken’s usual spy novels, … Continue reading →

Finger Lickin’ 15, by Janet Evanovitch (audio version)

Posted on July 21, 2009 by Terry BarkerMay 9, 2016

Janet’s books are pretty predictable, not that you can solve the mystery easily, but the interaction between Steph and Ranger, for example, is always the same. And way too much of it. But Lula is always unpredictable and she was … Continue reading →

My soapbox

My profession is mainframe programming, but I dabble in web work, too, hence this blog. There’s a business side and a family side–look to the left and you’ll see categories that will guide you down each path. On the business side, I’ll cover material on mainframes, independent contracting, web gizmos, and anything else that I find interesting about said subjects.
